SC Not To Extend Licenses Of Liquor Shops On State, National Highways For A Year

The Supreme Court today refused to give any relief to owners of liquor shops on state and national highways.

Liquor shop owners had filed a petition seeking extension of their licenses by one year, which the apex court dismissed. The existing licenses shall expire by March 31 and no new ones are to be issued.

WHAT THE COURT SAID ABOUT LIQUOR SHOPS
  1. Liquor shops owners from Puducherry, who were the original petitioners, had first moved the Supreme Court. There are 62 liquor shops along a one-kilometre stretch on the national highway in Mahe district of Puducherry.
  2. The Supreme Court had earlier banned the sale of alcohol within 500-metre radius of state and national highways. The court had directed closure of all liquor shops along state and national highways.
  3. The apex court further directed that all concerned authorities comply with the order and desist from issuing any new licenses for opening liquor shops along the highways.
  4. The court even stressed that there would be no advertisements of any liquor shop visible from the national or state highways.
  5. The top court had asked chief secretaries and police chiefs of all states to chalk out a plan after discussing the same with the excise department. Municipal authorities must also cooperate to implement the order.
  6. The court gave the order in pursuance of road safety and to curb the menace of drunken driving
